Full disclosure: J. M. Coetzee is my favorite living author. This novel revolves around a Polish pianist in his seventies who becomes hopelessly infatuated with Beatriz, a married Spanish woman who helped organize his concert in Barcelona. This late novel doesn’t disappoint: it’s an honest and unsettling portrait of unrequited love that serves as a solid introduction to the Nobel Prize Winner’s work. For those already familiar with Coetzee, this book is a reminder of why he is great.
