She touches on themes of creative struggle, the development of personhood, and how a child takes on the role of parenting when a parent rejects them. Written in 2012, this book continues to be a classic in the graphic novel library, layering different levels of text documentation with tightly controlled pen-and-ink illustration to provide a nuanced tour into the comic author’s inner world. Highly recommend reading this around Mother’s Day.
