The Mitford Affair

The Mitford Affair by Marie Benedict

This was a somewhat complex and complicated novel about the six Mitford sisters who are dealing with scandals and rumors regarding Hitler and Great Britain’s war with Germany. One sister divorces her husband to marry a fascist leader; another is reportedly Hitler’s mistress; and yet another sister uncovers important documents that she considers sharing with their cousin Winston Churchill. I struggled a bit with the back and forth between time periods and sisters who often used different nicknames but about halfway through, I got into the groove and really enjoyed the power dynamic between the sisters. The book is based on the real-life sisters: Diana the Fascist, Jessica the Communist, Unity the Hitler-lover; Nancy the Novelist; Deborah the Duchess; and Pamela the unobtrusive poultry connoisseur.
