This story is the prequel Angie Thomas’s “The Hate U Give”, This story explores the life of Maverick Carter an African American teen who has to face the struggles of gang violence, poverty, and understanding what it means to go from being a boy in the hood to actually becoming a man in fatherhood. This story is a beautiful example of how a young man learned to overcome his environment for the betterment of himself and his child.
