This kicks off the delightful five-book series by Stroud, now developed into a Netflix series called Lockwood & Co. The novels follow Lucy Carlyle, a talented “listener” in an alternative London where ghosts wander and actively hurt the living. Unfortunately, only children can even see the danger, changing the landscape of childhood. Lucy joins Anthony Lockwood and his companion George in order to learn more about the history of “the problem.” Lucy is a fun heroine who has far too much on her shoulders, but she is also a traditional teenager. This was a fun read for me as an adult and I imagine I’d have loved it even more when I was Lucy’s age. Perfect for fans of “the chosen one” series like Percy Jackson or Harry Potter, this series is spooky fun.
