After watching The Expanse series a few years ago, I knew I needed to dig into the literary world that James S. Cory created. This sci-fi thriller is filled with every future scenario that one can imagine and more. One thing I appreciate about the books, compared to the show, is the intimate thoughts inside the characters’ heads. Seeing it in words is much easier to imagine than seeing it on the screen. This series is set in outer space with three main cultures in place: Mars, Earth, and the Belt, which is made up of multiple “stations” and moons, filled with humans born in low-g outer space, also known as “Belters.” Amongst the Belter community is an anti-inner planet faction called the OPA – Outer Planets Alliance. This group of rebels challenge Earth and Mars throughout the story and draw the reader into their world, causing the reader to not only take their side but fall in love with their culture and way of life. I found myself cheering for them throughout the first book. This is a great book series for the avid sci-fi reader who likes to get to the point early on in the story. The author tends to keep the intricate technical details out and digs right into the meat of the story right away. I have already moved on to the second book Caliban’s War. I am excited for the adventure that awaits.
