Queen Demon is Book #2 of the Rising World Series, written by Martha Wells, who wrote one of my favorite series “The Murderbot Diaries.” After waiting patiently for this book to be release I was not disappointed. Side note: I read some chapters of this and listened to other parts, depending on my mood. At first I was a little jumbled on the storyline, because the story starts farther in the future than where the previous book left off. Once I realized that the writer was flipping back and forth between the past and present, it was easier to follow and to connect the puzzle pieces together. This story touches on the relationships that Kai, (a.k.a. Kaiiesteron, the Fourth Prince of the Underneath – an immortal demon with powers of a witch who is able to possess dead bodies in the human world) builds with his fellow travelers, his family, and his friends, both old and new. This book also introduces a new type of witch called the Dust Witch. This coven of witches becomes a main point of the story and eventually the reader will understand why they’re important in the future battles to come. The story picks up towards the end and fills in gaps that are not previously filled, but also opens more questions as to what the future holds. I appreciate the concept of this storyline and the demonic/witch-like powers that come along with it. I am guessing there is a plan to write a third book to this series, which I do not think was the original intent of the writer. But the ending to this story leaves an opening for a complete trilogy rather than a duology. We shall see!
