Debt: The First 5000 Years

I like this book because to me, like most people, debt is a scary word; this book makes it less so. Written during the occupy wall street movement, this book depicts the development of commerce in all major civilizations by examining their records of debt. I really enjoyed how the author diagramed the connection between debt, religion, and systems of power, repeatedly arguing that people have always owed each other something and the sum of which creates their relationship. The author touches on many of my favorite topics: religious moral codes, ancient social dynamics, and patterns from history that have reworked themselves into the present.
