If you like historical fiction you will love this book. It starts in 1857 when a midwife from New York takes a position in the New Mexico territory.      The book covers her trip west by train, stagecoach and horse back and then starting a new life in Santa Fe. The author does a great job at explaining the intricacy of Spanish, Mexicans, Indians and Europeans all intermingled in the small town of Santa Fe. Make sure you have the time to sit and read as this book is over 700 pages long and if you are like me, once you start a story, you want to complete it!
