When I first started reading this book, I kept saying to myself, “Wow, this is so weird … but wonderful … and different.” Once I realized where the story was going I could not put it down. I have never read anything like this. A fantasy that mixes a tiny bit of sci-fi into the mix seems to be the normal route of N.K. Jemisin’s books. But this one was an urban fantasy set in real time NYC. I found myself molding a movie in my head with a little Ghostbusters snark and comedy layered on top, especially when introduced to the “enemy” of New York.
I recommend this book to anyone looking for a fantasy read, but with a pleasantly weird current-day urban twist. Also, (without spoilers) anyone who has spent some time in NYC and its surrounding boroughs will appreciate the personalities assigned to each character.
