When a young, beautiful doctor is found hanging from a tree on Elijah’s remote land, he becomes the prime suspect in her murder. The evidence is overwhelming and closely mimics the events in Elijah’s failed novel Middletide. Middletide is a 90s-era murder mystery about an author who returns to his hometown only to be accused of a crime that mimics the plot of his novel. Through then and now timelines, you learn that Elijah and the murder may be more connected than is hinted at in the novel. The ending was resolved a bit too quickly for me, but otherwise, this was a fascinating “meta” read.
