After reading the Broken Earth series, The City We Became, and The World We Make, I was ready to read more of N.K. Jemisin’s work. The Dreamblood Duology is a fantasy concept that I have never read in any other story. Set in the desert in an area that gets one great flood per year, the topographic setting is difficult and living there has its challenges. The desert-city of Gujareeh is a city of peace and focuses on strict law to keep that peace. Those who do not follow the law can be sentenced to a Gatherer who deemed them corrupt. The Gatherers enter their bedroom in the wee hours of the night to put them to sleep forever in the most peaceful way possible. Gathers can also be called upon to the terminally ill or those of old age. By using magic the Gatherer collects Dreamblood while sending the participant to a peaceful afterlife.
