This trilogy was typical of N.K. Jemisin’s work. She always seems to come up with storylines and themes that have never been done before. This epic fantasy follows the lives of gods and demons living amongst mortals. Some even mix with and fall in love with mortals. After a major war between gods and the betrayal of the god of light, the other gods unfortunately become enslaved by mortals and their power is controlled and tapered by a heart stone in the main city of Sky. This trilogy follows the rise & fall of tyranny, the lives of mortals and gods, mortals becoming gods, and love and hatred between them all. As most of N.K. Jemisin’s work, I recommend this trilogy to anyone who loves fantasy, but wants a change of pace, with no dragons & wizards, but a little bit of magic here and there.
