WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The James V. Brown Library, 19 E. Fourth St., is featuring a presentation about the films of 1975 with film critic Joseph W. Smith III, on Thursday, July 31st.
The presentation, “50 Years Ago in Film: From Jaws to Cuckoo’s Nest and Beyond,” is an overview of the most impactful movies from 50 years ago.
Fifty years ago, two movies made history. “Jaws” became the highest-grossing movie up to that time, establishing the “summer blockbuster” phenomenon while also introducing the world to Steven Spielberg, along with Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss and, of course, Bruce, the mechanical shark.
Several months later, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” became only the second movie ever to take all five top Oscars: Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actor, and Actress.
Some of the included titles are “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” “Return of the Pink Panther,” and “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” During the presentation, there will be a lively discussion about the movies that made history in 1975.
Speaker Joseph W. Smith III has a master’s degree from New York University in English and American Literature. Smith is a published author, retired English teacher, avid reader, hiker, and adventurer. Smith is the author of “How To Write a Research Paper,” “The Best of Doug Smith,” and “The Best Movies You Never Saw.” He currently writes for Webb Weekly, West Branch Life, Northcentralpa.com, and more.
