This young adult book is written in novel-in-verse format. It took me a little while to get used to reading this style of writing. Some pages resemble poetry books, having a few lines on a page or lines of text that resemble shapes. Some pages have a few words or just one sentence. I liked the author’s ability to narrate pictures of places and people. Many of the images were crystal clear in my mind. This is not just another wagon train traveling West adventure, but instead the story of Mary Ann Graves and her family traveling with the ill-fated Donner party. Hunger, death and a harsh climate are some of the perils faced by the ill-prepared pioneers.
