Seventeen-year-old Nadia Turner, grieving her mother’s suicide, takes up with the pastor’s son, Luke Sheppard. It’s a summer romance, but the pregnancy and cover-up that result have long reaching repercussions for Nadia, Luke, and Nadia’s best friend, Aubrey, as they become adults. The Mothers of the title are the elderly ladies of their African-American church, who serve as a Greek chorus for the story.  The novel asks the question, are we always affected by the choices we make as young people? What if we had chosen differently?
