book cover of The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera

If you are looking for an action-packed YA read, I would suggest you check out this title. It is a coming of age, end of the world, sci-fi, extravaganza. What I expected to be an escape from our current socio-political climate actually mirrored a lot of the same ideas and arguments. Earth is in crisis, and in order to survive a group of humans embark on a journey to find another planet. Upon waking (hundreds of years later), our heroine learns that what began with good intentions had been corrupted by the means in which those in power used to achieve certain goals. As the last living person on board with memories of human life on earth, can young Petra redirect what others have tampered with and in turn save what is left of humanity?
