Book Cover of The Lager Queen of Minnesota by J. Ryan Stradal

Two sisters, born and raised on a Minnesota farm, follow two very different paths, but somehow wind up in the same place. Edith, the older sister, marries a truck driver and becomes famous for the pies she bakes for her job in the kitchen of a nursing home. Helen is obsessed by the creative possibilities of brewing great beer, and marries a brewery heir to make sure she gets to do that. But it is Diana, Edith’s granddaughter, who raises beer making to an art. She creates a community of beer-making grandmothers, and in the process heals her family. I don’t like beer, but I loved this story.
