Can there be any thrillers or conflict in fiction without people who lie and persist in doing really stupid things? Flight attendant Cassie Bowden wakes up next to her one-night stand in Dubai to find him dead beside her. Cassie and her date were very, very drunk the night before. In fact, Cassie drinks to blackout, and she cannot be sure she didn’t kill him. If she had just called hotel security though, it wouldn’t be much of a story.
The reader knows that she didn’t murder her date, because Bohjalian tells his story in alternating narratives, Cassie and the killer. No one is exactly who they seem to be in this fast-paced thriller.
