The Exiles Cover

This is a story about women surviving unspeakable atrocities and offers a glimpse into the mistreatment of the Aboriginal people. The book features three women who all have no rights: Evangeline, a London governess who becomes pregnant with a child by her employer’s son; Hazel, a Scottish midwife’s teen daughter; and Mathinna, a young Aborigine orphan who is taken from her tribe by a visiting dignitary who wants to “reform a savage.” Evangeline and Hazel meet on a slaving ship that is bound for the women’s prison on Van Diemen’s Land where the three women’s lives become interconnected in tragic ways. Kline is a meticulous researcher and a wonderful storyteller.
