The book opens up with a girl named Hal who is broke fortune-teller in a beach boardwalk. She receives a letter inviting her a funeral of someone who shares her last name, and the letter indicates it is a relative who will most likely leave her a good sum of money. Hal is desperate, so she spends all her remaining money traveling to the late Mrs. Westaway’s home. Hal’s mother died a few years ago, and she is desperate for a close family connection, even if it is based on a misunderstanding. The book is full of twists and turns, and features lots of creepiness within the Westaway home and its staff members. I will say that the ending is a shock and slightly disturbing. I did like the Tarot card fortune telling aspect of Hal’s and how she’s using her abilities to manipulate the Westaway family members.
