Emira is the African-American babysitter for Alix Chamberlain’s two year old daughter Briar. One late night, in response to an emergency situation at the Chamberlains’, Emira is asked to take care of Briar. While shopping in the nearby all-night grocery store, Emira is accused of kidnapping her white charge. Someone videos the whole encounter, and we are off and running. But the strength of this book is that it turns into an unexpectedly complex meditation on issues of race and class. This was a powerful debut.
