An African-American nurse in an OB ward in New Haven is told by her supervisor to not treat the baby of a white supremacist, at his demand.  The baby dies of complications, despite the efforts of the team of doctors and nurses around him. The nurse is arrested and charged in his death. That’s the outline, but Picoult uses the story to explore racism, overt and not so overt, and the toll it takes on those living with racism every day. Engaging and enraging.
