This has been called a domestic noir novel and I couldn’t agree more. It focuses on two women, Jane and Marnie, who have been best friends since they were kids. Marnie falls in love with Charles, and naturally asks her best friend what she thinks of him. Jane lies and struggles with that lie, wondering if she had told the truth, would Charles be alive today? The story is told as a confessional from Jane’s perspective, with each lie foreshadowing the next throughout the book. But Jane is not necessarily a reliable narrator; at times she is creepy and obsessive and you wonder why she kept lying when it was clearly damaging to her friendship with Marnie. It is a story about mental health, grief and loss, as Jane struggles to deal with the incredible losses she has endured: her father, her mother, her husband, her sister and then her best friend.
