The James V. Brown Library, 19 E. Fourth St., invites readers to explore the lives of those in the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community this June, recognized by the American Library Association (ALA) as LGBT Book Month.

First celebrated by ALA in 2015, LGBT Book Month has been recognized since the 1990s by The Publishing Triangle, an organization that supports LGBT people in the publishing industry. June is also recognized as Pride Month across the United States in honor of the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City; the riots were acts of resistance against law enforcement who raided local gay clubs.

Sharing literature helps us learn about people from all walks of life and assists us in developing respect and understanding for everyone in our community. LGBT Book Month provides an opportunity to celebrate these voices and highlight outstanding literature recognized through several awards, including the Stonewall Book Award, named in honor of the Stonewall Riots, the Mike Morgan & Larry Romans Children’s & Young Adult Literature Award, Rainbow Books, and Over the Rainbow Books. In celebrating LGBT books, we emphasize that the library is a place for everyone.

The library supports the PA Forward statewide initiative, which believes that when Pennsylvania residents improve their command of five types of literacy – basic, information, civic and social, health and financial – they can achieve greater success as students, parents, employees, consumers, as citizens. Libraries are community centers of information, technology and learning that will fuel educational and economic opportunity for all of our citizens.

The James V. Brown Library is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; and 24/7 at
