I came very close to abandoning this book. It starts slow, introducing the characters and their personalities and preoccupations. Then McMurtry puts everyone in motion, and I could not put it down. Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call are the former Texas Rangers who decide to drive cattle north to Montana. They assemble the cowboys, and the cattle, and head north for a dangerous journey that will take many months, and change many lives. There are multiple threads to the story, and McMurtry brings them together powerfully. Gus and Call are unforgettable characters. So are Clara and Lorie, and the West itself. Loved it.
