The James V. Brown Library, 19 E. Fourth St., has received a $2,000 grant from the Rotary Club of Williamsport as part of the club’s 2019 Grant Program.

The grant is part of the Rotary Club’s efforts to support nonprofit organizations that advance educational opportunities or health-related initiatives for the greater Williamsport community and international projects.

The funds will support the library’s Summer Learning finale. The finale will celebrate the success of children and families who complete the Summer Learning Program at the library. The library’s Summer Learning Program is designed to eliminate the learning loss, called the “summer slide,” that occurs when children are not in school. This takes place through STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, art and math) programs that support and encourage family engagement, reading, and hands-on learning.

During the finale, each Summer Learner who completes the program will receive a ticket to attend an on-site Scholastic Book Fair and get an ice cream or sherbet treat from the Bruster’s truck.

“We are grateful for our community and excited to have Rotary’s support, along with that of the Friends of the James V. Brown Library, to initiate this new incentive,” said Barbara S. McGary, executive director of the Brown Library. “We expect that it will attract more kids and families to sign up for summer learning, and to complete the program.”

“We look forward to working with the grant recipients and to forging partnerships where we can to improve our community. The grants program is just one way we hope to make a difference,” said Marc Shefsky, president of the Rotary Club.

The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

The Rotary Club of Williamsport was organized to lead charitable efforts in the greater Williamsport area while supporting the ideals and mission of Rotary International. The Club meets every Monday at noon at the Genetti Hotel in Williamsport.

The Brown Library is part of a national “Libraries Transform” effort to increase awareness of the changing role of libraries and the ways in which libraries are transforming to meet the information needs of their users.
