Two half-sisters are born in Ghana in the 18th century in neighboring villages. They are unaware of each other’s existence.  One is captured and sold into slavery from the Cape Coast Castle occupied by Englishmen. The other marries one of those Englishmen, and lives a life of relative ease in the Castle. The novel follows the lives of the sisters and their descendants in Ghana and in America, through eight generations of war, slavery, and violence; from the Civil War, to Jazz Age Harlem, to present day. This is a powerful journey to take with a great writer.
