This was an Amazon book of the month that examined the opioid crisis from the perspective of a high-school student athlete. Mickey is injured right before softball season and is prescribed OxyContin for her hip injury. Determined to make it back on the field for her final season, Mickey finds that she can push herself harder in training and recovery by taking more pills than prescribed. But she’s not an addict like Josie, who sells her the pills she gets from her neighbor.
By the time the season is underway, Mickey’s friends know something is wrong but they can’t quite put their finger on it. And it takes a devastating night of regret for Mickey to finally ask for help. This is a powerful read and I highly recommend it for high school students.
