On an August afternoon, two sisters ages 11 and 8 go missing from the shore of the Kamchatka peninsula in a remote part of Russia.

 Over the course of a year as the police investigation turns up nothing, the novel explores the effect of the disappearance on the community, told by a witness, a neighbor, the detective, a mother.  Revealing the connections between community members, and the different viewpoints each narrator brings, the novel paints a picture of a community and a region that is compelling and readable.
