What is it like to be the sole survivor of an airplane crash that killed 191 people including your mother, father, and brother? Eddie is only 12 when the airplane carrying his family to start a new life in California goes down near Denver. Napolitano alternates an hour by hour narrative on the plane, where we meet some of the ill-fated passengers, with chapters on Eddie’s new life after the crash. Eddie is now known as Edward, and he is living with his mother’s sister and her husband. He struggles to find his way back to safety and some kind of normality, to deal with his short-lived but disturbing fame, and to learn how to love again.
