Nancy Wake is an Australian expat living in Paris 1936, trying to make her way as a freelance journalist, when she witnesses Nazi atrocities first hand while in pursuit of a story in Vienna. This well-researched historical novel follows her life story from her marriage to her beloved Henri in Marseille, to her eventual involvement with covert Resistance operations, to her command of Resistance fighters called Maquis in the Auvergne area of France. The story goes forward and backward in time, using her four code names to designate time frame and location. I loved this book, and loved the fact that it is a true story. It raises the question, what makes some people able to risk everything for a cause?
