I fell in love with Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, and was excited to find this book in the Friends book sale. The graphic novel is about her great-uncle, Nasser Ali Khan, who is a celebrated tar (stringed, long-necked lute instrument) player in Iran. When he realizes his beloved tar is broken, he goes off in search of a replacement. When he can’t find one, he realizes that his life is no longer worth living, so he spends his remaining eight days of life in bed. The final panel is a heartbreaking page that shows his burial.
