Hillbilly Elegy, by J.D. Vance, does a good job of describing the plight of small-town Appalachia, the lack of jobs and decline, but a good fictional account that speaks of the heart of the people is Before I Saw You by Amy Sorrells. Where does hope come from for a single mother who grew up with a drug-addicted mom? Hope comes from an elderly neighbor who rehabilitates wildlife, a church that points to the uncritical love of God, and ends with an unexpected but fitting conclusion.
