The book opens with two young rookie cops, Francis and Brian, who eventually get married and wind up living next door in the suburbs. Two of their children become best friends, but Francis’ wife Lena struggles to get Brian’s wife Anne to be welcoming. No one has a name for it at the time, but Anne is struggling with severe mental illness. About a decade later, there is a horrible incident that takes place when Anne’s son, Peter, is a teenager, that tragically keeps the families interconnected for the rest of their lives. The shocking accident is not the main focus of the book, however, as it begins to examine mental illness, alcoholism, love, forgiveness and acceptance.
