This is a young adult coming of age novel that follows to Mexican-American teenagers: Aristotle “Ari” Mendoza and Dante Quintana. Ari and Dante are unlikely best friends who each struggle with their racial and ethnic identities, their family relationships and their sexuality. Dante is the son of professors, artistic and not very masculine. Ari, on the other hand, is known for his strength, has a brother in prison and a loving but distracted family. Ari’s family doesn’t talk much about why his brother is in prison and his father’s issues with returning from the Vietnam War. This story felt authentic as it explored family, friendship, trauma and homosexuality.
