This is the sequel to his debut book, An Absolutely Remarkable Thing. You do have to read the first book to understand this one, as it picks up right where An Absolutely Remarkable Thing left off.
In that book, a young woman named April May becomes famous after she posts a video online about The Carls, which are 10-foot tall alien robots that popped up in various cities around the world. At the end of that book, it seems that April is killed and the Carls disappear as suddenly as they appeared – but all is not what it seems.
In A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor, the world picks up in a post-Carl world. The economy has tanked, a new social media company startup is taking control of the world, including creating its own financial system. April’s friends are left to deal with their grief and belief that she may not be dead. The book is full of sci-fi and social commentary about our obsessions over social media and fame, and asks important questions about what truly makes us connected.
