Rachel Morelli is a high school senior whose dream is to attend Pratt Institute in New York City for photography. Her father, a professor at Kent State University, has other ideas. Set during the conflict of the Vietnam War, this novel follows Rachel as she fights to live the life she wants and struggles with an unrequited love for injured returning veteran, Evan.

The rich prose of Fedel’s writing transports the reader back to Kent, Ohio, 1970 when the country’s political turmoil culminated when National Guard troops fired upon protesting students on KSU’s campus. You are drawn into the world of protagonist Rachel and entangled in her loves and losses, her victories and defeats. As a fan of well-researched, historical fiction, I loved this book and was left wanting Rachel’s story to continue after the last page.
