This is the 2018 Man Booker Prize winner. Our nameless narrator, an eighteen-year-old girl in a nameless Northern Ireland port city in the 1970s, is an oddity. She walks around the city, always reading a book while walking, which attracts the attention of Milkman, a much older and married paramilitary. This is the premise that allows the author, in a stream of consciousness narrative, to explore themes of violence, class distinctions, religious conflict, tribalism, and sexism. A challenging but engaging read.
